Top Ten Films of 2004

2004 was an interesting year in movies. Here’s my Top Ten of the past year.
Note: Keep in mind, I did not see every single movie that came out in 2004. Just indulge with me.

10) 13 Going on 30 – Charming, funny, and sweet. The best romantic comedy film of the year.
9) The Terminal - I originally had I, Robot on my top ten list until I remembered that this movie did come out in 2004. Only Steven Spielberg can make an entertaining and touching movie about a tourist being stuck at an airport terminal. This was good from beginning to end. Tom Hanks' character has got to be the unlikeliest hero of 2004.
8) Fahrenheit 9/11 – Whether you agree with Michael Moore’s politics or not, he still made a pretty entertaining and thought-provoking film. Plus, he made people care about important issues again. Yes, he did go over the top, but so does the rest of Hollywood.
7) Spiderman 2 – 10x better than the first movie. I still don’t like Kirsten Dunst as M.J., but the rest of the movie was great!
6) Open Water – No need for special effects on this one. As a matter of fact, this is the scariest movie I saw in 2004. Here’s a low budget film about 2 tourists stranded in open water with sharks and other sea creatures about to feed on them. Yeah, I think that’s pretty scary. I was literally on the edge of my seat for most of the movie.
5) Garden State – The best feel good movie of the year. It’s hilarious, sweet, and unique. Also, you can never go wrong with Natalie Portman.
4) Collateral – Tom Cruise’s best movie since … well, maybe since Jerry Maguire. This a great 2 hour cab ride through the dark side of Los Angeles. Plus, the screenplay was awesome; it was smart, amusing at times, and definitely dark.
3) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – The most original film of 2004. This film doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Although, I’m glad that it received Golden Globe nominations. Wake up Oscar folks! This film deserves it.
2) Maria Full of Grace – I saw this movie last week. Now I know why this has been critically acclaimed as one of the best films of 2004. The story was absolutely amazing and the characters were all too real. Don’t let the subtitles deter you from seeing this movie. You won’t regret it.
1) Kill Bill 2 – People think I’m strange for saying that this movie was way better than the first installment. But, it is! This one actually had a story – and a good one at that. Kill Bill 2 is not Tarantino’s best work. Pulp Fiction is still far superior from any of his other projects, but this movie does have it all: intrigue, violence, drama, comedy, and 2 memorable scenes involving eyeballs. This is the best film I saw in 2004.

Other Awards:
Worst of 2004: I (Heart) Huckabees
Over-rated: The Grudge, Sideways, Closer
Funniest: Garden State, Anchorman
Best High School Flick: Mean Girls, Saved, Napoleon Dynamite
Best Sci-fi: I, Robot
Too Over-the-Top: The Day After Tomorrow
Best Sports Movie: Miracle
