My Response To ...
... the President's State of the Union Address:
GEORGE: Tonight, with a healthy, growing economy, with more Americans going back to work, with our nation an active force for good in the world, the state of our union is confident and strong.
DAVE M: We have a healthy, growing economy? Where? Lay-offs are still rampant. Businesses are still closing down. Oh George, you’re such a kidder.
GEORGE : America's economy is the fastest growing of any major industrialized nation. In the past four years, we have provided tax relief to every person who pays income taxes, overcome a recession, opened up new markets abroad, prosecuted corporate criminals, raised homeownership to the highest level in history, and in the last year alone, the United States has added 2.3 million new jobs.
DAVE M: Man, where do I even start. You’ve provided tax relief, but not to EVERY person. We are still in the middle of a recession (once we stop losing jobs, then you can say we’re ok). We’ve prosecuted corporate criminals? Who? ENRON doesn’t count, that was back in 2003. Oh, you were probably referring to Martha Stewart … nice catch Mr. President. The U.S. may have added 2.3 million jobs, BUT how much did we lose? And, what kind of jobs are being added?
GEORGE: My budget substantially reduces or eliminates more than 150 government programs that are not getting results, or duplicate current efforts, or do not fulfill essential priorities. The principle here is clear: A taxpayer dollar must be spent wisely, or not at all.
DAVE M: Finally, a wise decision. There is a lot of dead weight out there.
GEORGE: To make our economy stronger and more productive, we must make health care more affordable, and give families greater access to good coverage, and more control over their health decisions.
DAVE M: Easier said than done. But, a good start Georgie Boy!
GEORGE on Social Security: The system, however, on its current path, is headed toward bankruptcy. And so we must join together to strengthen and save Social Security.
As we fix Social Security, we also have the responsibility to make the system a better deal for younger workers. And the best way to reach that goal is through voluntary personal retirement accounts.
DAVE M: Isn’t that why we have 401k plans? If the system is broke, fix it. Just don’t abandon it. And, privatization is not the answer.
GEORGE: Our nation, working with allies and friends, has also confronted the enemy abroad, with measures that are determined, successful and continuing. The al-Qaida terror network that attacked our country still has leaders but many of its top commanders have been removed.
DAVE M: Really? Top commanders? But you still don’t have Osama. That’s like saying, "We captured Lex Luthor’s henchmen – SUCCESS"! You’re funny, George.
GEORGE: Our country is still the target of terrorists who want to kill many and intimidate us all, and we will stay on the offensive against them until the fight is won.
DAVE M: Don’t you mean, "stay on the defensive?" That's why it's called, Department of Defense.
GEORGE: America will stand with the allies of freedom to support democratic movements in the Middle East and beyond, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world.
DAVE M: Yeah, but will our ALLIES continue to stand with us? Or, should I say, "What allies"?
GEORGE: The United States has no right, no desire and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else. That is one of the main differences between us and our enemies.
DAVE M: So, invading Iraq and "spreading democracy" over there wasn’t meant to impose. I didn’t know that we were invited to invade?
GEORGE: We will not set an artificial timetable for leaving Iraq, because that would embolden the terrorists and make them believe they can wait us out.
DAVE M: Actually, there’s no timetable because there’s no exit plan. There wasn’t one from the beginning and there won’t be anytime soon.
DAVE M: Yay! Four more years of this! Yay!
