49ers' New Home?

I’ve been to Monster Park a couple of times and I tell ya’, that stadium is a dump. It’s old and out-dated by NFL standards, plus it isn’t easily accessible to the public. Last week, a new proposal for a new stadium came to light. Mayor Gavin Newsome apparently has high hopes in bringing the Olympics to the Bay Area. Yeah right – the world’s greatest athletes would love sight-seeing in the streets of San Francisco while enjoying our local attractions such as the homeless hangouts and the family-friendly Castro district, but that’s a different story.

Anyway, I think it’s time for the 49ers to build a new stadium. However, if they build it in the same spot in Candlestick Point, you’ll still have the same problems with access to the stadium. The Giants, A’s, Warriors, and the Raiders got it right. Play in a field where people can easily get to with the additional access to public transportation. Sadly, even if San Francisco builds a new stadium for the 49ers, I might continue to stay home and watch the games on TV if going to the stadium means spending a whole day in traffic and fighting for parking. That’s the ugly reality of Candlestick Point.

Another upside to a new stadium is the quality of talent that might consider coming to play for the 49ers. Teams with new stadiums, with the exception of the Lions who suck every year, usually lure the best free agents in the league. Why? Well, first off, owners are often pressured to provide a quality product in order to fill the seats to a brand new stadium. Second, players love playing in nice fields, with new turf and a nice fan-friendly environment. It’s time to say goodbye to Monster Park, despite all of its history and charm. Give Alex Smith a better home – maybe he’ll play better.
