Dave's Recommendations
Artist of the Month: Placebo
Album: Once More with Feeling
Must Hear Tracks: Pure Morning, Special Needs, Every You Every Me
Oh how I long for the days when alternative music ruled the world. I just recently became a fan of this band after hearing their CD from one of my co-workers. This collection of their best songs has influences from rock to 80’s new wave to punk. The lyrics are quite complex and have some comparison to The Smiths and A.F.I. Their sound is totally original and unique – just listen to the vocals. The whole album is solid although it’s not the type of record that everyone would like. It’s an acquired taste.
Out in Theaters: Crash
This movie was emotionally exhausting to watch. There were a few times during the film that overwhelmed me to the point of tears. What started off as a film about racial prejudice, ended up being a collection truly memorable of stories and characters that will be remembered long after you walk out of the theater. This movie reminded me so much of Magnolia, another brilliant piece, about strangers and how their lives seem to be intertwined in some sort of way by simple happenstance and odd circumstances. Crash is perhaps a great lesson on how we are all linked together regardless of our differences (race & color). This is an awesome film with great performances and memorable in every way. Grade: A+
On DVD: In Good Company
There were a few of themes to this movie. Depending on the viewer, you can say it’s about good business and bad business practices, or about family, or about mentoring. But what it is to me is that there are always new lessons to be learned in life regardless if you’re 50 or 26. In a business sense, the movie tackled the issue of corporate takeovers and how companies are composed of real people – not just some name and a number on a piece of paper. Also, I really liked the ending of the movie – without giving too much away, it was the ideal conclusion without any of the typical Hollywood clichés. Grade: A+
Restaurant: La Tapatia
Located in Willow Pass Road in Concord (one block away from Brenden Theaters); it has become one of our favorite Mexican restaurants. My co-worker took me out there for lunch one day and I was hooked from then on. I recommend the wet burrito and a dish called, “Machaca” – shredded beef with eggs with tortillas on the side. Yum! Also, they have a live 2-man Mariachi band almost every day during lunch and dinner. It’s a real hoot. Most importantly, the meals are fairly affordable compared to the over-rated Chevy’s restaurants. Plus, their food is ten times better and more authentic.

I saw In Good Company in the theatres and loved it! I should rent it or something. Quaid always plays the father role in movies so awesomely.
